We do mainly service/panel upgrades to 100 or 200 amperes,
Also do home wiring insurance inspections and may even do some Kob & Tube replacement wiring.
The Knob & Tube wiring (some is 100 years old) is beginning to fail!
I have been called a few times to repair it, however, I am not doing most of those repairs anymore - I only REPLACE IT and only do that mainly in the Fall and Winter months.
The most usual malfunction symptoms are: Lights dimming or turning off by themselves and then coming back on later by themselves again, a certain receptacle or light fixture alone not functioning etc.
One of many problems is due to the many splices/connections all over which were done by sodering the wires together all over the attic and walls.
These connections have been (temperature changes effect) contracting and expanding in attics and inside walls for many years - 100 years in some homes.
The temperature changes and electrical load variations combined activity in the wiring, under load, creates SPARKS as it connects and disconnects all by itself UNDER the dried WOOD CHIPS INSULATION up there in the attic!
Added insulation in the attic, covering this wiring, makes it even more likely to create more heat = even more serious problems & danger of a fire!
Repairs in ANY wiring in a home by amateurs is, most of the time, another cause for a fire.

Replacing knob & tube wiring ( or rewiring) is one of the most difficult jobs in residential type electrical work. Many agreeable concepts have to come together for us to do all of the work our selves by the hour or by contract etc..
You may choose a method of us tearing down part of walls & ceilings (usually we only do minor damages). You may do all openings yourself and then the accesses to run cables become easier for us and much more reasonable in price. If you choose some magic method, which many think it exists, or think that rewiring can be done without damages for running cables, then it may or may not be possible in MOST areas of your home, however in that case of being extremely careful, be prepared to pay double or triple for your rewiring especially done by some others or amateurs! Before a contract is signed, we do a TRIAL run on rewirng for you to decide if you can put up with all the mess, the surface damages, dust all over, flying debris etc.
May 25, 2011 - NOTE: One rewiring price of a bungalow of $13,000.00 can be much cheaper than another for $10,000.00 Why? Consider the EXTRA costs of extensive surface repairs afterwards including personal stress and time delays etc.!
To rewire a one storey single family home, being one storey and of standard construction, by a legitimate electrical contractor, expect $5,000.00 to over $10,000.00 and easily can be well past that! With some contractors, expect to have large openings, holes, cut out sections of a ceiling etc. LEFT all over to be covered, patched, repaired and painted afterwards at extra costs all on your own - or paying well over even $2,500.00 by a general renovator contractor to do it!
We make it easier most of the time - We patch up all small openings (and some larger ones) - all you have to do is MATCH painting in small areas!. Most of the time the damage is AROUND the devices or light fixtures. Very easy to do, we will show you how.
A 2 storey home may cost well over $14,000 and a 3 storey can cost well over $16,000.00 to $20,000 to even well over $30,000 in some cases. No two rewiring jobs are EVER alike!
There are over 10 different scenarios to fit individual customers to go about rewiring a home.
Insure to read more about being ready for rewiring by us and "especially by others" at: http://www.actionelectric.ca/homerewiring.htm
